What Does SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Actually Cover?

Think of it as a solid travel medical plan. It covers emergency medical treatment, hospital stays, doctor visits, and evacuation if needed. It works in most countries worldwide, and you can purchase it from anywhere — even if you’ve already left home. That last point matters more than people realise.

It doesn’t replace comprehensive travel insurance (trip cancellation, for instance, isn’t included on the Essential plan), but for long-term nomads who need reliable medical cover without a fortune in monthly premiums, it hits a sweet spot that’s hard to match.

The New Annual Plan — Is It Worth It?

SafetyWing recently launched the Nomad Insurance Essential Annual Plan, and it’s genuinely a good option if you spend most of the year abroad. Here’s what makes it different from the monthly plan:

The home coverage piece is particularly useful. A lot of nomads end up going back for a month or two, and it’s always been a grey area. With the Annual Plan, you’re covered at home as well — up to those limits. That gives proper peace of mind during your visits.

My Exclusive Reward Code — 8 Weeks Free Electronics Coverage

As a SafetyWing Ambassador, I can now offer something that wasn’t available before. When new members use my reward code, they receive 8 weeks of free electronics theft coverage added to their Nomad Insurance Essential plan. That’s your laptop, your camera — all the kit that keeps your trip running.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy SafetyWing Nomad Insurance if I’ve already left my home country?

Yes — and this is one of the biggest reasons nomads love it. Unlike most travel insurance providers, SafetyWing lets you purchase a policy after you’ve already departed. There’s a brief waiting period of up to 3 days for new subscriptions to become active, but there’s no requirement to buy before your trip begins. This makes it genuinely flexible for full-time travellers who don’t always plan that far ahead.

Does SafetyWing cover pre-existing conditions?

The Nomad Insurance Essential plan does not cover pre-existing conditions as a rule — this is standard for most travel medical policies. However, SafetyWing’s higher-tier plan (Nomad Health) is worth exploring if you have ongoing medical needs, as it functions more like a full health insurance product. For the Essential plan, it’s best understood as emergency and acute care cover for otherwise healthy travellers.

What’s the difference between SafetyWing’s monthly plan and the new Annual Plan?

The monthly plan renews automatically every 28 days and is great if you want flexibility with no long-term commitment. The new Annual Plan, on the other hand, gives you a 10% discount for paying upfront, includes coverage at home for up to 90 consecutive days (179 days total per year), and comes with a US$150 prepaid debit card so you’re not paying out of pocket for covered claims. If you know you’ll be abroad for most of the year, the Annual Plan typically works out better value.
