As I sit here and write this post, it is International Women’s Day! A day in which we celebrate women. I am sure you have heard many quotes, and in particular, the quote, “Here is to strong women – May we know them, may we be them, and may we raise them.”
So what does this all mean? And why does raising a strong, confident daughter make this day an even more special day to celebrate? I know I have written about my daughter before and how important it is to raise our girls (or young women) to do what they love (even in a male-dominated field).Â

Why do we celebrate International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day is all about celebrating all kinds of women in different ways. So this global day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of so many women. Although International Women’s Day can be dated back to 1909, it wasn’t celebrated until 1977, when the feminist movement adopted it. (Thank you, United Nations, and can I say “Halleluia”)!
For many countries like Cuba, Vietnam and even Moldova, it is a public holiday (can I hear a “hell yeah?”). For other countries like Romania and Chile, it isn’t a public holiday, but it is celebrated nevertheless. It is a day (well, supposedly anyway) when men give women thanks!! However, of late, more and more women are stepping up and giving thanks (just because sometimes men miss the point, really).Â
Each year the United Nationals (UN) embark on a theme to celebrate this special day, and this year is no different. Today, we are celebrating Women in Leadership: achieving an equal future in a C@vid World. This is to celebrate all those women in the world in health care, community organisers, innovators and caregivers during one of the most challenging years we have faced worldwide.Â
So to the mothers, daughters, sisters, cousins, friends, employees, employers, acquaintances, and leaders of our countries, today is about you, about challenging the status quo and contributing to society, in your household, in the workforce or in your neighbourhood.Â
It is about the sacrifices you make, the courage you face and the example you lead; today is about supporting those around you rather than tearing them down. It is about women worldwide, from every race, culture, and generation; it is about gender equality and human rights! For those who have paved the way for us and for those who will pave the way for generations to come. I thank you!Â
Something to think about
It is not about comparing ourselves to the men in our lives; it is about encouraging the women around us to do an excellent job in whatever field they choose to excel in. So let’s straighten those tiaras, walk in those heels and strive for a better place for the next generation that will take our place. Â
This entire week I will be celebrating some amazing women and many fascinating businesses because, let’s be honest, one day just isn’t enough.Â
